Welcome to Avian Haven Richmond Hill. Here is everything you need to know to prepare for your bird's first stay with us.
Reach out through our contact form or by phone. Tell us about your bird — species, age, any special needs — and the dates you need care. We respond within 24 hours.
We schedule a brief consultation (in person or by phone) to learn about your bird's diet, routine, personality, medical history, and any behavioural quirks. This is when we build your bird's personalized care plan.
Bring your bird and supplies to our facility on the scheduled date. We walk through the care plan together, answer any last questions, and make sure you feel confident leaving your bird with us.
Your bird settles in. You receive daily photo and video updates. At pickup, we provide a detailed care summary covering eating habits, behaviour, health observations, and any notes for you.
Bringing familiar items from home helps your bird feel secure in a new environment. Here is our recommended packing list.
Bring enough of your bird's regular pellets, seed mix, and any special dietary items to last the entire stay plus one extra day. Label each item clearly. We want to maintain their exact diet to avoid digestive upset.
2-3 favourite toys and a familiar perch help reduce stress. If your bird has a preferred sleeping perch or a comfort toy they are attached to, definitely include it. We have additional enrichment toys available.
Written notes on your bird's daily routine: wake time, meal times, favourite treats, bedtime, cage covering preferences, and any behavioural cues we should know about. We will review these together at drop-off.
If your bird is on medication, bring the medication with clear dosage instructions. Bring a copy of any recent vet records, especially if your bird has known health conditions. Include your avian vet's contact information.
You are welcome to bring your bird's own cage if it helps them feel at home. We also have clean, appropriately sized enclosures available for all bird sizes from finches to macaws. Let us know your preference when booking.
Your phone number, an alternate emergency contact, and your avian vet's clinic name and phone number. If anything comes up during the stay, we need to be able to reach you or your designated contact quickly.
During the consultation, we gather everything we need to build your bird's personalized care plan. Here is what we will cover.
Your bird's species, age, sex (if known), and how long you have had them. Whether they are hand-raised, rehomed, or wild-caught affects how we approach their care and socialization.
What your bird eats (pellets, seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables), feeding times, favourite treats, foods to avoid, and any dietary supplements. We replicate your exact feeding routine.
Wake time, bedtime, cage covering preferences, out-of-cage time habits, nap schedule, bath preferences, and any ambient sounds or music your bird is used to.
Is your bird social or shy? Nippy with strangers? Comfortable being handled? Any fears, triggers, or favourite activities? This helps us interact with your bird safely and positively from day one.
Any current or past health issues, medications, allergies, or recent vet visits. Whether your bird has been tested for PBFD, psittacosis, or other contagious conditions. Your avian vet's contact details.
